Destination History
Porto Santo was discovered in 1418 by Portuguese explorers João Gonçalves Zarco, Tristão Vaz Teixeira, and Bartolomeu Perestrelo during a voyage along the Atlantic coast. According to legend, they found shelter on the island during a violent storm, naming it "Porto Santo", meaning "Holy Port."
The island became Portugal's first overseas settlement and played an important role during the Age of Discovery. One of its most famous residents was Christopher Columbus, who lived in Vila Baleira after marrying Filipa Moniz Perestrelo, the daughter of the island's first governor. During his stay, Columbus studied maritime charts and navigation, knowledge that later contributed to his historic voyage to the Americas in 1492.
Throughout the centuries, Porto Santo relied on agriculture, fishing, and trade. Today, it is best known as a peaceful holiday destination, celebrated for its 9-km golden sandy beach, crystal-clear Atlantic waters, therapeutic mineral-rich sand, and relaxed atmosphere. The island is now one of Portugal's most attractive beach destinations, welcoming visitors seeking nature, wellness, and outdoor adventures.
